Biblical Theology 6: Biblical Theology of the Gospels 2

Biblical Theology of Jesus and the Gospels- Survey in Matthew Contd
  • 3:13-15
    • What does it mean that Jesus must be baptised to fulfill all righteousness?
      • Israel was baptised in the sea 1 Cor 10
      • Baptism is a water ordeal- the flood resulted in Noah and his families blessing. The water meant vindication for Noah and his family and judegement for everyone else
      • Israel went safely through the red sea, the Egyptians were judged
      •  2nd generation Israel go trough the Jordan (Joshua 5:1)
      • By getting baptised, Jesus is identifying with sinners. He is about to work all righteousness for us.
      • By baptism Jesus is to be confirmed to be a light to the nations.
        • Matt 3:9 Israel is tree that are about to be cut off. From 70AD blood Israelite's can't be traced as records were kept in the temple.
  • 3:16-17
    • a dove comes down like the dove that arrives in the time of Noah
    • 1 Peter 3 links the flood with baptism
    • Is 63:11-14
      • Isaiah is talking about Israel being in exile. They rejected the Spirit who gave manna.
      • Is 64 is the appeal for the new exodus- 'oh that you would rend the heavens' v1
      • Matthew 3:16 'the heavens were opened' fulfills Is 64:1
  • 3:17- the Spirit of God falls on Christ
    • Is 42:1 the servant is the one in whom God's souls delights. He will extend the new creation to all of creation.
    • Isaiah 49
      • The servant of Isaiah 49 is Israel v3 yet explains that Israel will 'bring back Israel' v5. The only reading is to say that Jesus acts as corporate Israel.
  • What is the mark of a true Israelite?
    • Israel had become proud and introspective. Israel saw the physical signs of the nation  (temple etc) as signs of their spirituality
    • The mark of the true Israelite is to go out and witness, reflecting God. Being a witness in word and deed.
  • 3:8- 'brood of vipers'
    • they are a brood of vipers because they are following after their Father who is the snake. The life of Jews did not bring fruits that reflected repentance.
  • 4:1-11- Jesus goes into the wilderness as Israel went into the wilderness after their baptism in the red sea
    • Matthew represents Jesus as the true Israel, Luke represents Jesus as the true Adam
    • 40 days to reflect the 40 years
    • Jesus quotes the words of Moses with the words that the Israelite should have said when they were tempted
    • 3 basic temptations: lust of the flesh, eyes and pride of life
      • Lust of the flesh: stones to become bread- Jesus is hungry. Jesus had to wait for the Fathers timing.
      • Lust of the eyes: tempted to jump and be protected by angels. The devil is quoting a Jewish tradition. The Jews would have declared him Messiah but this was not the Father's timing.
        • 4:6 is from Psalm 91. The devil quotes from a text where the next verse talks about his own doom.
      • Pride of life: shown the glory of kingdoms- be given all possession. Temptation to become an idolater. Israels' major sin was idolatry.
    • Mark skips the temptation narrative but mentions that Jesus is with the beasts and the 'angels attended to him'.
    • Jesus is the true Adam who can subdue creation
    • The temptation is Jesus' fight with Beelzebub (also a Philistine King in the OT)
    • This is where the binding of the strong man takes place- Jesus now casts out demons
    • Eden was the first temple. Adam should have gone to the tree of judgement when the unclean snake entered to curse it and exile it.
    • Jesus' work here is consummated at another tree which is for 'the healing of the nations'
    • Jesus dominates the promised land by being loyal to God's word
    • Daily devotions are a eschatological fight
    • Each day we want God to speak to us so that we can respond with God's word to the devil
    • Enjoying the word is like enjoying a free perfume sample in a magazine- we get the aroma that keeps us reminded of who we are in Christ
  • 4:16
    • light vs darkness 'the people dwelling in darkness have seen a great light'
      • the division of light and darkness happens at every new creation- Genesis, Exodus
  • 4:18-22
    • Jesus reconstitutes Israel by calling his disciples
  • 4:23-25 'he heals every disease'
    • the curse of the fall brings death. Jesus heals- he is reversing the curse
    • the new creation will be the final reversal of the curse at the fall
    • Jesus has come to set right what Adam didn't do.
      • Adam fails and brings a curse
      • Jesus succeeds and restores the body and soul
      • Jesus is our household manager in Ephesians 1. He puts everything back in order.
    • Isaiah 32, 35- at the time of restoration there will be healing
    • Sanctification is coming out of exile. The people of Israel didn't come out of Babylon because they were enamored with the idols of Babylon.
  • 5:2-12
    • the beatitudes are examples of the blessing that could have come through trusting God in the garden
  • 5:14-16 'you are the light of the world'
    • We are light based on our identification with Jesus.
      • Last mention of light was the reference from Isaiah in Matt 4
      • Is 60 talks about Israel being a light to the nations
  • The sermon on the mount heavily emphasises 'the Kingdom'
    • Adam was meant to be the first vice-regent
    • Jesus rules as Adam should have ruled. We rule as we are in Christ.
  • 5:17 'do not think I came to abolish the law... I have come to fulfill them'
    • Jesus fulfills in his obedience, he fulfills the verbal prophecy's, he fulfills the types of the OT
    • He fulfills every major prophecy in his first coming and so inaugurated the latter days
    • Eschatology is the move to the new creation. This is not the main point of the Bible- the main point is that everything is to be to the glory of God
  • 6:9-13
    • The Lord's prayer is a prayer for people living in the end time
    • 'your Kingdom come' this is the kingdom Adam should have introduced. We need to pray it will continue through us
    • 'on earth as it is in Heaven' pray that we will be a significant part of the Kingdom on earth
    • 'forgive us... as we forgive those' Are we forgiving people? Forgiveness is an intrinsic characteristic of a true Christian. We must rely on God's grace. We extend the boundaries of the peace found in Eden by forgiveness. All Christians are able to forgive as they know forgiveness
    • 'deliver us from the evil one'- we are in an eschatological trial always
    • 'Yours is the Kingdom'
  • 7:24-29 building a house upon a rock
    • 'House' refers to temple
      • Any temple not built on the rock of Christ will be blown away
      • 'on this rock I will build my church'- Jesus is the rock
      • Jesus is the true temple
